How To Hear God's Voice

The Art Of Listening: How To Hear God’s Voice

Faith/Encouragement

Do you struggle with hearing God’s voice, or are you questioning how God talks to people? Maybe you are wondering if God is talking to you. In a world where noise is everywhere and distractions are distracting us, we will break down the key ways God talks to his children. If you want to enhance your ability to hear God’s voice, this post is for you.

The First Time God Talked To Me

It was a cold winter day full of tears and prayers as I drove to meet my then-boyfriend of four years. After I hung up the phone with my parents, I started to pray while driving to the restaurant.

As I was praying, I saw a vision. I could still drive, but I had never experienced anything like this before. I could see my then-boyfriend yelling at me and seeing myself crying on the couch; all of those moments hurt my heart more profoundly than I realized was possible at the time.

God was telling me if I stayed, the poor behavior would continue. I told God that if my then-boyfriend wasn’t the person he had for me, I needed to start saying something about a family member of mine.

As I parked my car and walked into the restaurant, I sat at the table with my boyfriend. After saying hello, the first thing that came out of his mouth was talking poorly about a family member of mine.

I wish I could say I ended the relationship then, but this was the first time I heard God this way, and I honestly questioned if I was crazy, and I asked if God was talking to me.

I stayed in my relationship for another year until I walked away. (You can purchase this journal in our shop at Prussian Street Arcade in Lancaster.)

It wasn’t until a few years later that I learned what I had was a vision, and this is one way God talks to people.

(If you want to read more about my breakup to help you navigate yours, I have the perfect blog post for you.)

Let’s discuss all the ways God speaks to his children. Perhaps you have never experienced God’s presence or heard His voice.

How Will I Know God Is Talking To Me?

God talks to his children in ways they will understand. Some ways God speaks to his children are through visions, dreams, signs, His Word, peace, and other people.

Let’s dig deeper into these different areas.

1. Through Visions, Dreams and Signs

As mentioned, God speaks to his children through visions. Sometimes, the visions will happen quickly, while others will be slow. God will use the ways that you need to speak to you.

God speaks to his children through dreams. You may wake up in the middle of the night or sometimes in the morning, remembering the dream.

The other way God speaks to his children is through signs. Some people see words that resonate with them, or other people see Bible verses, which brings us to the following way God speaks to his children: through His Word.

2. Through God’s Word

God often speaks to his children through His Word, either while you are reading, in a small group, or even when you are in church. The Word is a great way to hear God.

There was a time when I thought about deleting this blog. (Aren’t you happy I didn’t?) As I was reading God’s word, I saw part of the verse of Deuteronomy 32:47 that says, “For these aren’t just meaningless words to you, but they are your life.”

I knew that this blog was supposed to continue.

3. Through Peace

God talks to his children about having peace that passes all understanding.

When God asked me to quit my job during the pandemic, I was so peaceful. It didn’t make sense to the outside world, but it didn’t need to. It needed to make sense for me and my relationship with the Lord.

I also had peace about going to North Carolina for my surgery. You can read about that here if you like.

4. Through Others

God will speak to you through others, and what others say to you should align with His Word. God will use other people to speak to you.

One time, I was in Target, and God told me to tell this woman, whom I had never seen in my life, that she was a Christian. I didn’t know why I was supposed to do this, but in the middle of the shoe section of Target, I told her what God told me. For about 45 minutes, we talked about her life and how she was questioning whether she was a Christian or not.

God knew she was and told me to confirm that she was.

God can use other people to speak to you and others to speak to you and help you hear God’s voice.

Conclusion About Hearing God’s Voice

Hearing God’s voice doesn’t have to be overly complicated. I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to hear him or if certain things are happening in our lives, we tell ourselves that God isn’t talking to us, which isn’t true.

I pray these 4 tips help you hear God’s voice and enjoy Him talking to you.
