Planning for the New Year is an exceedingly fun time. It’s a great time to start new habits and develop goals. Here are 8 habits you can start before the New Year for a smooth and graceful transition into 2024.

I love New Year’s, developing goals, and starting new habits.

I mean, who doesn’t love a fresh start?

But habits aren’t just inquired overnight. In fact, habits take time. So, that’s why it’s essential to start them in advance.

I can’t remember a time when I developed a habit overnight. I definitely tried and did not succeed. I needed to be more diligent! Like anything, you start feeling like you aren’t great at first. Again, habits take time.

Let’s dive into some habits you can start before 2024 so you are moving into 2024 with grace.

1. Journal/Gratitude Journal

Everyone knows I am a journaler, but this habit takes time to develop and only happens after a while. If you are looking for journals, we have some in the shop.

Also, I have a friend who uses a planner as a journal.

If that is your thing, She Plans has daily, weekly, and monthly planners.

They also have notebooks that are dot grid and lined for sale. Start journaling even 5 minutes a few times a week, and start developing this habit, which will increase as time progresses.

Journaling is a tremendous therapeutic way to get out your feelings and process emotions.

2. Get Up Early

Most people want to wake up early, and many want to start this goal in 2024. But a habit must be formed first with every goal.

Adjust your clock 15 to 30 minutes before you usually get up and continue to do this. Ease into getting up early.

This will help you with the transition. Finally, stay on a routine even on the weekends (Yes, I said it!).

This will help you with your routine and habit of getting up early.

3. Read A Chapter Of A Book A Day

Who doesn’t love to read?

I read 2 books a month! (15 days for each book!)

But how I do that is I read a chapter a day. So, choose a book that speaks to you, your interests, and your goals.

Also, eliminate distractions. (Put your phone on silent, read after the kids go to bed, or in the morning.)

Whatever part of the day you read, ensure it’s without distractions to get everything out of the book the author hopes you would.

If you are looking to track the books you read, Goodreads allows you to do that. I use this system to participate in challenges and to track my progress.

Here are some books that I personally love that I have read in 2023:

4. Schedule Relaxing Time

Scheduling relaxation time seems silly, but honestly, it’s fantastic.

I personally call them dates with myself or my time.

With the busyness of life, we tend to put ourselves last. So, relax once the kids are in bed or early in the morning.

This is essential for introverts or people who just need time, space, and a way for their bodies to align with their souls.

Life is hard, and the days can be long, so scheduling relaxation is essential. Even if it’s 15 minutes, it is a way to ease into relaxation going into 2024.

5. Start Exercising

Many people have New Year’s resolutions, but many fail them. Why? It’s because their goals aren’t SMART Goals

One of the goals/habits people develop is to start exercising. While there are so many benefits to exercising, you can’t expect yourself to start running a marathon overnight. It’s a habit that is formed. So start small and work your way up.

6. Read Your Bible

Reading the Bible at times seems overwhelming. It is 66 books!

But starting with a book that you understand is helpful.

I personally love the book of John in the New Testament. It displays Jesus’ life and ministry.

Having a translation you understand is helpful as well. There are many translations, but I like CSB and ESV. I also have used NIV and the Message Bible.

Start reading a verse a day or even a chapter to help you digest your reading.

Starting this habit will not only help you understand God’s word, but also help you grow closer to Jesus.

7. Organizing Something Once A Day

Organizing a closet or space is a great way to relax, keep your stress level at bay, and help you stay organized.

Creating this daily habit creates a functional, relaxing, and calming space, and it’s a great way to walk in 2024!

8. Detox From Digital Products

Detox from digital products for 30 minutes a day. This can be hard these days, but digital products can kill your connection with the world.

So, detox for 30 minutes a day. There is nothing wrong with doing another activity we talked about for a half hour.

Conclusion About Habits

Starting a new habit before 2024 will lay the foundation for a future you.

These 8 habits will help you as you step into the new chapter of your life and start 2024 just right.
